Ostara – the Spring Equinox
Ostara is the celebration of the vernal equinox. The theme is balance – as there is balance between night and day, light and darkness. It is the first day of spring when the plans and activities of Imbolc become a reality. Ostara is a German Goddess of fertility who is associated with the moon, it is full at this time of year, and her sacred hare, whose outline can be seen in the moon. Often Ostara was depicted as the body of a woman with the head and shoulders of a hare. The hare was viewed as a mystical creature that was reborn every morning and a sign of immortality. The egg is seen as a symbol of new life emerging from existing life. So is the seed which is the future generation that has come from the present and the past.
The spring equinox is celebrated with decorated eggs, dancing and leaping the fire into a new future.
