Imbolc is the mid point between the winter solstice and the vernal equinox.   It is a time of awakening, marking the transition from winter to spring.   The ground is becoming warmer.   Some seeds can be put in the soil.   The ewes start to lactate in preparation for the birth of their lambs.   Birds too begin searching for a mate and start the task of building their nests.

Imbolc is also known as Candlemas when there would be a procession with people wearing a candle headdress.     It is part of a pageant of purification that honours the goddess Brigid.    It was believed she travelled all over Ireland on Candlemas eve.  People left a a garment on the door step for her to bless as she passed.   In the course of the year, the maiden Brigid will change  to mother and then to crone.
